Understanding TDS Levels: What Your Water Report Really Means

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is one of the most widely referenced metrics on drinking water test reports in Saudi Arabia. Yet, many homeowners and facility managers find it difficult to interpret what the numbers mean for appliance lifespan and everyday consumption.

What Exactly Are Total Dissolved Solids?

TDS comprises inorganic salts (principally calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates) and small amounts of organic matter that are dissolved in water. In municipal supplies and groundwater throughout the Kingdom, TDS can range anywhere from 150 ppm to upwards of 2,500 ppm depending on local desalination and aquifer sources.

  • Under 50 ppm: Very low minerals (often tastes flat unless remineralized).
  • 100 – 250 ppm: Optimal range for crisp, refreshing drinking water taste.
  • 300 – 500 ppm: Acceptable municipal standard; may start causing kettle and shower scale.
  • Over 1,000 ppm: Unsuitable for boilers, coffee espresso machines, and causes rapid scale buildup.

How Reverse Osmosis Bridges the Gap

Modern 7-stage HYDRION RO systems utilize high-rejection composite polyamide membranes to strip out up to 98% of dissolved minerals, followed by a dedicated post-filter calcite stage that reintroduces healthy trace electrolytes for perfect taste and pH balancing.
